What We Look for Before Investing in a Startup

Not every good idea is ready for serious capital. Some of the most promising startups we evaluate don’t get funded not because the idea is weak, but because the fundamentals aren’t there yet. Here’s what we actually look for.

1. A Real, Scalable Problem

We look past the pitch to the problem underneath it. Is this solving something real, and can the solution scale beyond a single market, city, or customer segment? A good idea solves a problem. A fundable idea solves a problem in a way that gets easier not harder as it grows.

2. A Business Model That Holds Up

Growth is exciting, but growth without a viable business model is just expensive. We look for clarity on how the business actually makes money, what it costs to acquire and retain customers, and whether the unit economics improve or at least hold steady as the company scales.

3. Leadership That Can Execute

Ideas are common. Execution is rare. We spend as much time evaluating the founding team as we do the product their track record, their ability to adapt, and their honesty about what isn’t working yet. A founder who can clearly articulate both their strengths and their risks tends to be a stronger long-term bet than one who only sees the upside.

4. Evidence, Not Just Ambition

Traction doesn’t need to mean millions in revenue, but it does need to mean something early customers, retention data, a working prototype, signed partnerships. We’re looking for proof that the market wants what’s being built, not just a founder’s belief that it will.

5. A Plan for What Comes After the Check

Funding isn’t the finish line. We look for founders who have a clear view of what the capital will actually do what milestones it unlocks, what risks it de-risks, and how the business will look different in 12, 24, and 36 months because of it.

The bottom line

We’re not looking for the safest bets we’re looking for the ones with real potential, backed by a plan that can survive contact with reality. If that sounds like what you’re building, we’d like to hear from you.
